The Farewell Pilgrimage — the Day of Tarwiya
On the Day of Tarwiya the Prophet ﷺ set out with a hundred thousand of his Companions from Makkah to Mina in his only pilgrimage, in which he taught the Ummah its rites, saying: "Take from me your rites of pilgrimage," and bade it farewell.
The Prophet ﷺ announced his Hajj, and people streamed to Madinah from every side. He went out with them in late Dhu'l-Qaʿda 10 AH, and when the eighth of Dhu'l-Hijja came — the Day of Tarwiya — he set out with those with him from Makkah to Mina, prayed the five prayers there and spent the night.
About a hundred thousand or more were with him, all following him in every movement and stillness, watching his talbiya and rites, as he said: "Take from me your rites of pilgrimage, for perhaps I shall not meet you after this year of mine." It was a pilgrimage of conveyance, instruction and farewell.
He ﷺ arranged the rites that Muslims follow to this day: Mina, then ʿArafa, then Muzdalifa, the stoning of the pillars, the sacrifice and the tawaf. He stood answering questions: "Do it, and there is no blame." So his pilgrimage remained the eternal model for every pilgrim until the Hour comes.
