What are the white days?

The white days (Ayyam al-Beed) are the 13th, 14th and 15th of every Hijri month, named after the full moon that brightens their nights. The Prophet ﷺ recommended fasting them: Abu Dharr narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “If you fast three days of the month, then fast the thirteenth, the fourteenth and the fifteenth” (Tirmidhi, Nasaʾi). Fasting three days each month equals fasting a lifetime, since every good deed is multiplied tenfold.

Monday and Thursday fasting

The Prophet ﷺ made a point of fasting Mondays and Thursdays, saying: “Deeds are presented on Monday and Thursday, and I love that my deeds be presented while I am fasting” (Tirmidhi). Asked about fasting on Monday, he said: “That is the day I was born and the day I was sent — or the day revelation came to me” (Muslim). It is an ongoing weekly fast tied to no particular date, and it can coincide with the white days.

Annual fasting days

Day of Arafah

The Prophet ﷺ said: “Fasting the Day of Arafah, I hope from Allah that it expiates the year before it and the year after it” (Muslim) — for those not performing Hajj.

Shaʿban and Muharram

Aisha said: “The Prophet ﷺ did not fast in any month more than in Shaʿban” (agreed upon). And he ﷺ said: “The best fasting after Ramadan is in the month of Allah, Muharram” (Muslim).

Days when fasting is forbidden

The Prophet ﷺ forbade fasting on the two Eid days (agreed upon) and on the three Tashreeq days after Eid al-Adha, for they are “days of eating, drinking and remembering Allah” (Muslim) — except for a pilgrim who cannot offer the sacrifice.

How were these dates calculated?

All dates are calculated astronomically per the Umm al-Qura calendar used in Saudi Arabia. In some countries the month may start one day earlier or later depending on local moon sighting, shifting the white days accordingly.
