The birth of al-Husayn ibn ʿAli (may Allah be pleased with them both)

al-Husayn ibn ʿAli ibn Abi Talib — grandson and beloved fragrance of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and master of the youth of Paradise — was born in Madinah. The Prophet ﷺ performed the ʿaqiqa for him and named him al-Husayn, and he resembled the Prophet more than any other from his chest to his feet.

al-Husayn was born to Fatima, daughter of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and ʿAli ibn Abi Talib in Shaʿban of the fourth year of the Hijra, about a year after his brother al-Hasan. The Prophet ﷺ gave the call to prayer in his ear, performed the ʿaqiqa for him and named him Husayn — a name the Arabs had not known before.

Many authentic hadiths affirm his virtue and his brother's, among them his ﷺ words: "al-Hasan and al-Husayn are the masters of the youth of Paradise," and "Husayn is of me and I am of Husayn; Allah loves whoever loves Husayn." He ﷺ would carry them on his back and prolong his prostration when they climbed upon him.

al-Husayn grew up in the house of prophethood upon knowledge, worship and courage, and would perform Hajj on foot many times, until Allah sealed his life with martyrdom at Karbala in 61 AH — so he combined the honour of lineage and the honour of martyrdom, may Allah be pleased with him.

Note — differing reports on the date: The well-known view is that he was born in Shaʿban 4 AH; some say the 3rd of Shaʿban, some the 5th, and some in the year 3 AH.
